Year-Round Island Destination Offers Recreational Cooking Classes, Demonstration Events, Private Dining, and Reception Venues for Local and Visiting Chefs and Educators in the Culinary Arts – Eugene J Berardi
NANTUCKET, Mass., May 31, 2016 /PRNewswire/ Eugene J Berardi — Nantucket Culinary Center (NCC) announced today that it completed final launch preparations over Memorial Day weekend – the official start of the island’s summer season. The year-round destination now features a full program of hands-on cooking classes, culinary-themed demonstration and speaker events, and the exceptional in-house Corner Table Café. NCC’s landmark building at 22 Federal Street is also one of the island’s most vibrant venues for private dining and parties.
Building on themes of social entrepreneurship and the innovative ‘third place’ concept (places that lend themselves to conversation and creativity outside of home and work) the center’s three floors are each dedicated to celebrations of community gatherings that highlight the culinary past, present, and future of the island of Nantucket:
- Events – NCC’s main floor features a demonstration and test kitchen for local and visiting chefs, and a host space for programs showcasing thought leaders throughout the culinary arts. Guests will be able to attend meets-and-greets with influencers and learn about current trends in cooking techniques, community-based farming and fishing, sustainable sourcing, and nutrition. Chefs and guest presenters interested in collaborating with NCC to host a demonstration event, book signing, or speaking engagement will have access to studio capabilities and the ability to record or live-stream their programs.
- Classes – The upstairs cooking school is the heart of NCC’s culinary home and features a state-of-the-art classroom kitchen that accommodates groups of up to 14 people. NCC’s signature cooking classes are built around an ever-expanding seasonal curriculum, and held on a near-nightly basis followed by intimate gatherings in the center’s private dining room overlooking downtown Nantucket.
- Corner Table Café – Located on the ground floor of NCC, the Corner Table Café includes eat in and take away options for Islanders and visitors. Open daily from 7AM – 9PM and offering a family-friendly environment, the cafe features delicious and nutritious snacks, meals, and treats inspired by seasonal local ingredients and the visiting chefs programs upstairs. Menu selections build upon NCC’s strong ties to NantucketGrown – a Sustainable Nantucket initiative – and reaffirm the culinary center’s mission to complement the extraordinary work already being done by island artisans, farmers, fishermen and vendors.
In a breakfast roundtable with members of the Nantucket business community this morning, co-founders Joy and Chef Greg Margolis reflected on their year-long startup process and the journey ahead. “Nantucket Culinary Center has become a literal hub of downtown activity. We love the sense of adventure guests are finding through our classes and events, and we couldn’t have been happier to welcome the start of our first summer season over Memorial Day weekend.”
Co-founder and Managing Director Joy Margolis said, “Most of you already know that Greg loves to feed people. NCC has allowed us to share our passion for all things culinary with our friends, neighbors and the community. I know that we’re succeeding in our underlying social mission every day as people drop by the cafe and feel welcome to pull out a board game or puzzle rather than heading right home.” She added, “Upstairs, our creative culinary programs offer something for everyone. We hope everyone with an appetite for island life feels they can now consider this incredible venue their own.”
Partnership with ReMain Nantucket
Nantucket Culinary Center’s landmark facility at 22 Federal Street was developed in collaboration with ReMain Ventures, an organization which seeks to spark for-profit innovation and create year-round jobs that enhance the health of the island community. ReMain purchased the then-abandoned building at public auction in 2014 and restored it to safe conditions before embarking on a year-long project to stabilize and repurpose the structure, and then enhance the facility’s sustainability profile (LEED certification is pending). As a result of these efforts, NCC’s home at the corner of Broad and Federal Streets is now a cornerstone of the downtown area, and a tangible example of the value that historic preservation, environmentally-responsible restoration, and social entrepreneurship can have at a micro level.
